FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team salvaged a draw against San Diego State on Thursday at Bulldog Soccer Stadium thanks to a late game-tying goal by Ciara Wilson.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a quiet opening ten minutes, Alexis Campbell came close to netting the Bulldog's first goal in the 13th minute off a Fresno State free kick. The ball would find Campbell in front of the net, but the senior's shot sailed over the net. San Diego State threatened with a chance of their own minutes later, but Shivani Battaglia responded with her only save of the half, keeping the contest scoreless.
Fresno State produced other scoring opportunities in the first half including chances by Sabrina Welch and Abigail Herren, but both were unable to find the target. The Bulldogs ended the first half without a shot on goal as the two teams headed into halftime with the score knotted at zero.
Just two minutes into the second half, San Diego State would net the first goal of the night. A crossing attempt by the Aztecs was headed outside the top of the box right to Lily Boudet who sent a strike past goalie Shivani Battaglia to give San Diego State a 1-0 lead.
Looking to respond, Sabrina Welch recorded Fresno State's first shot on goal of the evening in the 59th minute off a free kick, but the Aztec goalie made the save through a screen of Bulldogs.
Despite being held without a shot for nearly thirty-minutes, Fresno State continued to apply pressure late in the game, and their efforts were finally rewarded in the 87th minute. Kayla Robinson found Ciara Wilson just inside the box as the forward sent a high shot over the San Diego State goaltender into the net, tying the game for the Bulldogs. It was Wilson's second goal of the season and only Fresno State's second shot on goal of the contest.
Aniston Renovato provided Fresno State with one more chance in the 88th minute, but her shot would be saved as the Bulldog's first conference game at home this season ended in a 1-1 draw.
