McCarthy hires pair of assistant coaches

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women's basketball head coach Ryan McCarthy announced the hiring of Jenna McCarthy and Ramaundo Vaughn as assistant coaches on Thursday afternoon.

McCarthy will also have involvement coaching the guards. McCarthy also comes from McCarthy's previous staff at the University of Alaska Anchorage, where she was a volunteer assistant coach for two seasons.

Prior to UAA, McCarthy spent a total of four seasons on staff at Florida Gulf Coast University, three of which were as an assistant coach.

McCarthy started her collegiate career at Butler University with the Bulldogs (2010-12). With the Butler Bulldogs, she was tabbed 2012 Horizon League All-Defensive Team while totaling 843 points, 429 rebounds and 276 assists in 131 contests. McCarthy spent her final two seasons at Florida Gulf Coast before transitioning into the coaching staff the following year. While at FGCU, she saw back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances, which included a first-ever postseason tournament win against Oklahoma State.

She came out of Miami Trace High School (2010) as a McDonald's All-American nominee and a two-time All-Ohio selection after producing 1,500 points in her high school career.

McCarthy earned her bachelor's degree in communications with a double minor in marketing and advertising from Florida Gulf Coast University in 2015.

Vaughn will serve as a coach to the guards and skill development. He comes to the Valley from Oakland, where he spent the last four seasons at Laney College as the women's basketball head coach as well as athletic director at Alameda College.

Vaughn comes off a four year stint at Laney College where he led the Eagles to four consecutive 20+ win seasons and three undefeated conference records. Prior to Laney College, Vaughn spent a decade at Diablo Valley College where he earned three Big 8 Conference championships, three Big 8 Conference Coach of the Year awards, five Big 8 MVPs, and two California Co-Player of the Year awards. At DVC, Vaughn also coached the Vikings to their first-ever state championship win since 1977 in 2019.

Vaughn's basketball success goes beyond women's basketball, as he is a member of NBA superstar Stephen Curry's off season skill training team, and has assisted in workouts with other high level players such as NBA stars Luka Doncic and Trae Young. He's also a camp coach at Curry's invitation-only SC30 UA Select Camp for America's top high school boys and girls basketball players.

Vaughn spent almost 3 years as the associate head coach at Hawaii Pacific University. While there, he recruited and helped develop several players who were named to the PAC West Conference All Conference teams.

As a player, Vaughn prepped at San Francisco's George Washington High School, where he was named Honorable Mention All SF Bay Area. He earned a basketball scholarship to Washington State University out of high school, but transferred to San Francisco City College after his freshman year. From San Francisco City College, Vaughn then went on to play at Hawaii Pacific University.

Vaughn earned his bachelors in Administration of Justice and a masters in Communication. He also holds a masters in Exercise Science from New Mexico Highlands University.
